Tring

Tring stands at a meeting place of the ways. Where the prehistoric Icknield Way, hugging the chalk escarpment from East Anglia to Salisbury Plain, crosses the Roman Akeman Street, piercing the Chilterns on its way from St Albans to Alcester, you will find Tring.

It is an enchanting spot for a town. The sides of the broad Bulbourne Valley sweep majestically away to north and south, while the great Vale of Aylesbury spreads out below the escarpment to the north-west. Out of the marshy plain but with better soils than the wooded hilltops, with springs and sites for mills and trading posts, it was a natural place for settlement.

Like a snapshot of English history, the story of Tring takes us from feudal manor to landed estate, horse and cart to canal, railway and motorway, and from village to town. Perhaps because of the beauty of the surroundings, modern Tring has retained its charm and character, and remains a pleasant and fulfilling place to live in, to work, rest and find pleasure.
